Over the years’ beauty standards imposed by society have pushed the idea that women must have smooth, hairless skin. Products such as hair removal creams, waxing strips and razors have been exhibited as an essential part of the transition into womanhood during puberty. However, with the new age of social media there has been a plethora of woman using social platforms to publicly accept and embrace their body hair.

As a 12-year-old child Kaur was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, which eventually brought the growth of excessive facial hair at the age of 16. After enduring years of bullying and torment Kaur made the decision to stop waxing and began to embrace her beard. She has now become an advocate of self-confidence and anti- bullying, a model and is now a Guinness World Record Holder as the youngest woman ever to have a full beard.

Harnaam Kaur

Leon is famously known for being the 21-year-old daughter of the rule breaking superstar, Madonna.  After posting a photo online with her daughter on New Year’s Eve, Leon became the target of bullying from online trolls all because she bared some underarm hair. However, this isn’t the first-time Leon has sported the all-natural look. In April, last year Leon flaunted her underarm hair while at the beach with her friends.

 In June 2017, Rose stirred up a heap of controversy after posting a photo on Instagram wearing nothing except a black bikini top, dark sunglasses, a diamond choker and a fur coat hanging off her shoulder, whilst displaying her 70s-style pubic hair.  Rose is no stranger to breaking stereotypes and taboos, the self- proclaimed feminist used the image to promote her annual SlutWalk Festival which “raises awareness about sexual injustices and gender inequality” and “aims to impact and uplift, while shifting the paradigm of rape culture”.

The “born this way” singer is definitely not shy to any controversy, her unforgettable outfits which include the meat dress and her Kermit the Frog dress definitely stirred some opinions. In June 2017, Gaga ditched her razor and uploaded a selfie rocking and embracing some underarm hair. However, this isn’t new for Gaga as she performed at the MuchMusic Video Awards with bright blue hair extension on her armpits.

The singer/actress’ outspoken and unapologetic personality usually receives criticism because she supports and defends topics that society tends to police. So, when Cyrus posted a photo of her unshaved underarms it was no surprise that she received backlash. The photo also showed that Cyrus had dyed both her armpit and pubic hair bright pink.
